In 2009 the growing numbers of late term abortions were being undertaken in Victoria. From 410 post 20 week abortions, 210 were performed on physically healthy babies, with 10 of these undertaken after 28 weeks, a time when these babies could have been safely delivered alive.
Over a ten year period from 1999 – 2009 late term abortions in Victoria grew from 66 to 410, with more than half of these being undertaken for psychosocial reasons.
The 2009 figures showed an even more disturbing increase in the number of very late term abortions on healthy, viable babies for maternal psychosocial reasons. Most of public continue to believe that late term abortions should only be undertaken when the women is either seriously ill or when their babies have no hope of survival and will die a more horrific death if allowed to come to term. Most people remain ignorant to the reality that women are continually offered surgical solutions to their economic, social, relational, and mental health problems when they are at a stage of the pregnancy when their babies could be safely delivered alive.
International research clearly demonstrates that up to 30% of women suffer serious and prolonged mental health problems after having an abortion especially with women who have late term abortions. Further research also indicates that a majority of women undergoing abortions do feel as if they have no other choice and are forced to choose between their unborns and their jobs, education, partners or family support.
Mother Teresa once observed: "The greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself; and if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell others not to kill one another.
As abortion is an issue involving a matter of life and death and civil and human rights. Abortion is a civil rights issue, On allowing abortion, it is denying the basic human right of a large segment of the population. Legalised abortion means abandoning this most basic human right, the right to live, of a whole class of human beings. Making abortion illegal is necessary to guarantee preborn persons equal rights. Saying it is wrong to kill born persons but acceptable to kill unborn persons is an violation of a baby's right to equal protection under the law. As the Bible says "Do unto others what you would have them do unto you; do not do or say unto others what you would not want done or said unto you."
